In the Quest

By Arshi Ashraf

Like birds go out in search of living

and come back with their stomachs full

I’d go with empty vessel

In the fields where the words grow

to cultivate them, off the roots

until the land becomes empty

I’d go in the gardens where the words bloom

hold them in the mouth like flowers

fill them in my pockets

and pluck until my bouquet fills

I’d go on the beaches where the words flow

and look for seashells on the shores

to get the pearls out

until I’m deprived of the waters

I’d go under ornamental sky where the words blush

to grab stars in my palm

and gaze at the gleaming moon

until it fills me with silken melodies

I’d go explore the world for pretty words

until I begin to shine

through their light
