The Green Room

By Mary Tanginoa Anau

We wait patiently outside this room with fellow patients, nervously wondering if our nurse today is friendly, funny or a good listener and easy on the needles.

As we wait we share stories with one another about our own experiences, struggles and challenges we face along our own journeys. Some stories we share are good, some not so good, but it’s the truth, regardless.

We are called, lining up like students in classrooms as we do, making excuses during weighing feeling guilty, not really. We try to strike conversation to avoid the weight gained.

The seats and staff are inviting and comforting, the machines now turning, we are snuggled into our warm but very thin blankets, and devices turned on for entertainment purposes if interested, not necessarily at times.

Choice of sandwiches, drinks and cookies for refreshments, not enough we reckon. Told to watch our intake, however, whatever grinning, mumbling silently to ourselves.

We sit for hours, we start conversing with staff, other patients and with visitors if any. We giggle, we sleep and cry a little when we need to. We stretch when legs are cramping, Lay back down when dizzy and watching the constellation of stars float by.

But this Green Room is a very special room. It can be a noisy and loud, busy and hectic and dull looking in appearance. But looks can be deceiving.

This Green Room has magical powers. The power to prolong us all through the toughest moment of our journeys. When there is no uncertainty and no return, this Green Room gives us hope. It gives us power and determination to strive forward. To become strong and brave through thick and thin. To accept and to adapt to changes.

We all have faith in this Green Room of ours. How fortunate we are to partake in such a magical room that we have here in our community. It’s a privilege to be a part of it.

We leave this special room as Warriors every day. Being grateful that we are lucky and blessed to still be here to enjoy things that matter the most. Reuniting with our loved ones who waits for us patiently to spend more quality time creating more memorable moments together.

Yes, our determination is much greater now. This rooms gives us that extra strength, courage and confidence. Nudging us to move forward and look ahead with pride towards the future.

We leave this but happily to return back to the same room that we have become accustomed to.

This Green Room has made us Warriors

Warriors for ourselves.

Warriors for our family and friends.

Warriors for our Community.
